Terms of use

These terms apply when you use oesa-global.com, the analysis page and its data, and when you are a member of or write for OESA. Read them together with the privacy notice.

This is a translation. The Norwegian version applies if the two differ.

1. Who we are and what the terms cover

The website is run by OESA – Oil & Energy Student Association (organisation number [registreres]), a voluntary student association for students of petroleum logistics, geology, economics and shipping. “We” and “OESA” mean the association. “You” means anyone using the site.

The terms apply to the whole website, including the analysis page, the field and company pages, the newsletter and My page. By using the site you accept the terms. If you apply for membership or publish analyses, you confirm this separately. Once the association has adopted its statutes, they take precedence over these terms in case of conflict.

2. Using the website

The site is free, and you can use it to learn, follow the industry and get to know the association. You must not:

• try to gain access to data, accounts or parts of the site you are not entitled to, or circumvent the access rules;
• put an abnormal load on the site or its APIs, for example through large-scale automated requests, or extract data in a way that prevents others from using the site;
• submit false or misleading information, or other people’s details, in the forms, or use them for advertising or spam;
• use the site for anything unlawful or to infringe the rights of others.

We may block access for anyone who breaks these terms.

3. The analysis page is not investment advice

The analyses, prices, maps, key figures, calendar and everything else on the analysis page and the field and company pages are made for learning and information. Much of it is written by students practising market analysis.

• Not investment advice. Nothing on the site is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any financial instrument, or personal advice. Price targets and assessments in the analyses are the authors’ own exercises and opinions. OESA is not an investment firm and is not authorised to give investment advice. Make your own assessment and consult an authorised adviser before investing. Investments can lose value.
• No guarantee that the figures are correct. The data is fetched automatically from many sources and may be wrong, incomplete, delayed or out of date. Some values are updated by hand, and some are OESA’s own estimates and calculations, for example the sales value of production and companies’ calculated share of production.
• Prices are delayed. Prices come from Yahoo Finance. Oslo Børs prices are delayed by about 15 minutes, and other prices may be delayed more.
• Ship data is incomplete. AIS ship positions are snapshots, and many ships are missing, especially far out at sea. Marking a ship as sanctioned relies on an automatic match of IMO numbers against public sanctions lists. It may be wrong, and it is not a legal assessment of the ship, its owner or anyone else. The flag is derived from the MMSI number and may also be wrong.
• Not for navigation or safety. Weather, waves, currents, sea ice, warnings, ship positions, installations and pipelines are shown for overview only. Never use them for navigation, operations at sea or any other safety-related decision. Use the official sources.
• Freight routes. The freight routes are the route definitions the Baltic Exchange uses in its benchmark indices, shown for reference based on its public guide. OESA does not show the index values or rates, which are data the Baltic Exchange sells. OESA has no affiliation with the Baltic Exchange.
• Maps and boundaries. Boundaries and sea areas on the maps are indicative and take no position on disputed boundaries or claims.

If an author writes about a company in which they own shares, this must be stated in the analysis (see section 7).

4. Data sources and licences

The data on the analysis page comes from public agencies and open sources, including the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, the Norwegian Coastal Administration, Fintraffic (Digitraffic), aisstream.io, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, ENTSOG, GIE AGSI+, Marine Regions, the offshore authorities of other countries, OpenStreetMap, Global Energy Monitor, Wikidata, Natural Earth and Yahoo Finance.

The data belongs to the sources, and each source has its own licence, for example the Norwegian Licence for Open Government Data (NLOD), Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0), the Open Database License (ODbL), CC0, the Open Government Licence and the NSTA Open User Licence, which only permits non-commercial use. The full list with the source and licence of each dataset is under “About the data on this page” at the bottom of the analysis page. If you want to reuse the data, you must follow the source’s licence and credit the source, not OESA. The sources have not approved or endorsed OESA’s use of the data.

5. Rights to the content

• OESA’s content. The texts, design, graphics, maps and compilations made by OESA, and the name and logo OESA, belong to the association. You are welcome to link to the pages and quote short extracts with credit to OESA. Any other copying or reuse requires written permission.
• Analyses written by members. The author keeps the copyright. See section 7 for what OESA may do.
• Photos and video. Photos and video by others are used under the licence stated with each image, for example Creative Commons or the Pexels licence. Some images are illustrations made with AI, and this is stated where they are used. Check the licence yourself before reusing an image.
• Trademarks. Names and logos of companies and organisations belong to them. Mentioning them does not mean they work with or endorse OESA, unless we say so.

6. Membership

• Who can join. Membership is open to students in subjects related to energy, offshore and shipping, in any year of study. You must be at least 16.
• Application and approval. You apply on the home page, and the board approves new members. The board may decline an application, for example if you are not a student or the information is incorrect. You become a member when the application is approved.
• Fees. Membership is currently free. If the association introduces a fee, you will be told well in advance and can decide whether to continue.
• Your obligations. Give correct information and keep it up to date on My page. Behave properly and with respect for others at events, in groups and in digital channels. The member directory and the analyses members may read before everyone else are for members only. Do not share them, and do not use information about other members for advertising, sales or anything other than contacting them as a fellow member.
• Leaving. You can leave at any time on My page (in Norwegian) or by writing to us.
• When the board may end a membership. In case of serious or repeated breaches of these terms, for example harassment, misuse of other members’ information or harm to the association’s reputation, the board may end the membership. You will be told why and given the chance to explain first, unless the matter is so serious that it cannot wait. If you are no longer a student, the board may ask you to confirm whether you want to continue.

7. Content you submit

This applies to analyses, images, messages and anything else you send to OESA or publish on the site.

• You are responsible for your content. What you submit must be your own or something you have the right to use, and sources must be given. It must not be unlawful, offensive, misleading or infringe anyone’s copyright, trademarks or privacy.
• No inside information. Analyses must be based on publicly available information. Never share inside information or confidential information, for example from an employer or an internship, and do not write anything that could affect a share price in a misleading way.
• Disclose your positions. If you, or someone close to you, own shares or other instruments in a company you analyse, this must be stated in the analysis.
• Licence to OESA. You keep the copyright to what you write. When you publish, you give OESA a free, non-exclusive right to publish, display and store the content on the website, in the newsletter, in reports and on the association’s social media channels, and to make minor changes to format and layout. We only change the substance by agreement with you. You can ask at any time for an analysis to be removed. We will then remove it from the website within a reasonable time, but cannot recall newsletters that have already been sent.
• Editorial responsibility. The board and editors may edit, reject or remove content that breaks these terms, and are under no obligation to publish anything.

8. Jobs, partners and events

• Jobs. Job listings come from the companies. You apply directly to the employer, and OESA is not a party to any employment. Always check the listing with the company, and never pay money or give bank details to get a job. If you think a listing is fake, let us know.
• Partners. Partnerships with companies are agreed separately in writing. Partners do not get the member list.
• Events. We may change or cancel events and will let you know as early as possible. If you cannot come, cancel on My page so that someone else can have the place. At events hosted by others, the host’s safety rules also apply.

9. Links to other websites

The site links to sources, companies and other websites. We have no control over them and are not responsible for their content, availability or privacy practices.

10. Operation and changes to the service

The site is run by volunteers. We try to keep it up and up to date, but cannot promise that it always works, that it is free of errors, or that the data from the sources is always available. We may change, move or discontinue features and content at any time.

11. Liability

The website and data are free and provided as they are. To the extent Norwegian law allows, OESA is not liable for loss resulting from your use of or reliance on the content, for example investment losses or lost profits, or from errors, delays or interruptions on the site or at the sources.

This does not limit liability for damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence, for personal injury, or any rights you have under mandatory law, including as a consumer.

12. Privacy

How we process personal data is described in the privacy notice.

13. Changes to the terms

We may change these terms. The date and version number at the top show which version applies. We will notify members of significant changes by e-mail at least 14 days before they take effect. If you continue to use the site or remain a member after that, the new terms apply. If you do not want that, you can leave.

14. Governing law and disputes

Norwegian law applies to these terms and to the use of the site. If you are a consumer living in another country, for example Denmark, you keep the protection you have under the mandatory rules where you live.

If you disagree with something, contact us first and we will try to find an amicable solution. If that fails, the matter may be brought before the ordinary courts in accordance with the rules on jurisdiction. Consumers can always go to the courts where they live when mandatory rules give them that right.
